  • Installing the spider ring?

You'll need to remove the DS crank with the correct tool, pop it in a softjaw vice then use the lock ring tool to remove the lock-ring, which has a normal threading. The spider will then slide off the back of the crank with a bit of persuasion. Pop the ring on in its place - you can't mount it incorrectly - then pop a bit of loctite on the lock-ring threads and bolt it down to the curiously specific 47nm, which is tight-as if you are a 60kg weakling like me.

If you are just changing chainrings there's nothing specific about it, same as any other crank.

  • Yes mate! Thanks for the info. Struggled to find a comprehensive guide online. Have got all the tools so should be good to go thanks to you.

In other news... Bought a synapse hi mod ultegra from Paul's Cycles. They sent the wrong colour and it came with a 32t cassette and medium cage mech when it was listed as 11-28. They're sending me a replacement cassette but still a bit of a ballache. Price was pretty good though so not grumbling too much. £40 for short cage mech and might keep the medium cage one, cassette and compact rings just in case I need to ride up any vertical walls into gale force headwinds

Photos pls. I'd keep the medium cage on it if it means you can slam the 32t cassette in there with the road double ring if where you are going is super-climby.

  • Don't bother with short cages mech, make no difference whatsoever.
