Which Tyres?

  • Just bought duranos for 20 quid each with another 10% off , used them all winter on the winter bike for two seasons of all that salt ice rain dock gutters and glass, a bit fraid but worth every penny for reliability rather than conti grand pix 24s

  • I need some info about Open Paves, how much they measure in 27mm? Are they good enough in gravel and towpaths? Are they durable enough for everyday use?
I guess I'll have to get latex tubes, which I don't have any experience. How much air do they loss?

  • How much air...

All of it eventually. But about 5psi an hour (although this varies depending on how fat you are, how fat your tyres are and the surfaces you're riding on).

So pump your tyres up before each ride.

  • Yeah measure 28 maybe 29 now streached on my 25widenrims.

    They're find on anything.

  • ^^ actually it's probably less than 5psi for road use.

    They lose "some" air...

  • Let agree that it lose air at some point shall we?

  • air is an abstract conception.

  • My rear tyre (latex tube) lost 45psi in 1 1/2 hrs of off trails this evening.

    FML

Don't take any advice from me.

  • I'm looking for a fat 700c tyre for touring in Scotland this summer. Mostly on road but there'll be a fair bit of off road and rocky tracks (from what I can tell from google earth). I'm upgrading my old Spesh crosstrail and swapped the crap suspension fork for a Surly Ogre and have bags of space to play with. This is what the clearances look like with 35s (Cheap Kenda cx and Schwalbe road cruiser):

I'm also thinking of riding to Amsterdam and back later in the summer so something perfectly good on the road would be good, though I guess I could run the road cruiser if it'll be too much of a compromise. Also really don't want to spend much; willing to sacrifice weight and maybe a bit of puncture resistance to get that and a nice riding tyre. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

  • Just fit the biggest tyres you can. You'll have more fun and suffer fewer snakebites.

    This.

I'd suggest the Schwalbe Land Cruiser but you may not want the grip on the edges – terrain wll be rocky but not 'technical' and you won't be racing anyone. A Schwalbe Marathon of some kind?

    Also.

Don't take any advice from me.

    This.

  • Cheers, I think "Just fit the biggest tyres you can" is the philosophy I'll go for. I'm thinking about going for these and making it a monster.

The profile should be good for the road and dropping some pressure with that much air should get me through the rough stuff.

Edit: I've gone and checked and I have 18mm rims- from what I can tell from MTB forums, this should be alright.

  • I am thinking of trying Grand Bois Cerf Green 28c.
Any forum hands on experience with these?

  • Latex tubes are amazing. Short ride yesterday with new latex tubes inside some nearly worn Open Pave - felt like new wheels and tyres. Excellent!

No more brutal butyl, just lovely latex..

PS (i) they did feel softer at the end of the ride so can concur that they lose "some" air.

  • Cheap pairs of 25mm Pro4s !!! They're really good tyres.

    Link.

  • Cheers for the tip
Am still using pro race 3s but will now have a pair of these in my parts bin.

  • Just got a pair of Panaracer 28mm Gravel Kings for a good price at CycleSurgery Sticking them on the CX bike for summer duty, will report back if anyone is interested.

  • won a campag vento clincher 1996 on ebay (rear) ive been reading that these rims are 19mm, whats the widest i can go safely and what should i go for?

  • Have you mounted these onto rims yet? I'm thinking of getting a set to use with Archetypes and trying to gauge their width and clearance on my frame.

  • Actually on that note. I have some rides coming up that will have mixed surface sections. I wan't to try and fit 28's - was going to get the Gravel Kings as they sound like good all round tyres anyway but given that they'll only be on the bike occasionally would there be a cheaper alternative?

  • I've got these mounted to 25mm rims, they measure up as described so 28/29mm width and around 25mm deep. Using them at around 80psi, but rode down at 60psi and they felt good.

Lots of grip and there doesn't seem to be much rolling resistance. Yet to see any cuts develop. I'd recommend them if you can get the pair for 40 quid like I did, I'm not sure what cheaper alternatives there are.

  • Cheers dude, exact info I was after. Thanks! Think I've missed the cycle surgery deal but may order anyway.

  • Will be racing a criterium in two hours - pouring rain made me drop the PSI on the Open Corsa CX 25's (actual 27c) to 88r/85f.

  • If you want to slow the air loss on latex tubes to near nil whack a bit of sealant in them.

  • Any fuck up any benefit of running latex?

  • Vittorias seem to hold air better.
