Not boring at all. i don't know the south part of that journey, but
i would point out that you can cross the estuary from royan with an inexpensive ferry, which will take you to the sea front in medoc where you can spend the night by the sea.
from there you can cross the garonne again just above bordeaux with a quick carferry in Blaye, or via bordeaux.
St-Emilion is a pretty nice town on the way.
essentially that would allow you to see more varied landscape than staying all the way the east of the garonne.
