perseverence has "sever" in it, and it's so full of Es that there's no room for any other vowels. Just think of the perseverence that an axe-weilding executioner who's had too many Es would need to sever the head.

Actually, it's 'perseverance' (and 'wielding'). :)

The best way to get it changed it is to spell it "perseverence" as much as you can online, and encourage others to do the same.

Dictionaries (should) only reflect usage anyway :)
