Is it OK to run 26mm drops in a 25.4mm stem?

Posted on
  • As per title I've realised that my drop bars, that I've just started using, are 26mm and all my ahead stems are 25.4mm.

I've read it's "dodgey" as it puts too much pressure on the bar and stresses it.

Am I OK or should I get a 26mm stem or new bars?

    Thanks

  • if your stem is like this:

it is ok to run 26mm

if your stem is like this:

it may be better to buy drop bars with 25.4mm. 26 bars in 25.4 stem may not snap under pressure but just to be on the safe side get 25.4mm bars.

  • Ta very much for your input. Its the version in your the first piccie, aheadset? So I'm good to go.

  • To clarify, it's the type of clamp that's important, not the quill vs. ahead factor. If your stem has a removable plate on the front that clamps the bars then you might be ok.

  • Ta for that but sorry I'm still not sure if my stem is the correct type.
It's this one, what do you think.
    Cheers

  • As ffm said, if the stem has a removable plate which is the case in your picture (silver part) then you are good to go. As when you will install the handlebar, you can control how much pressure you put on the bars. Should be no problem in your case i think.

  • good ta very much all thats re-assuring.
