  • Was there ever a verdict on whether or not its safe to remove a ground floor chimney breast?
    I'm kind of getting conflicting information but the gist of it seems to be "yes but you shouldn't".

  • if you remove a few tons of brick which are substantially holding up several more tons above them, without replacing the original load bearing bricks with something of equivalent load bearing strength, i.e. a suitably designed and installed RSJ and bracing, then at some point early structural failure will occur. How early, and with what consequences it's hard to say, but even if you sold the place on after having done/not done the work, you and the 'builder' could still be liable in event of injury to subsequent tenants.

    tldr = get it done professionally and signed off by BC, or not at all
