I think with the loading you would be better going for less speeds and more robust chains and rings. Tandems are hard on their drive-train.

This seems like a nice idea, but actually the last time chain rollers (and with them chain rings and sprockets) were wider than they are now was in the days of 8-speed. Not sure that Claris is really going to be any more durable than Ultegra :-)

I'm in the very early preplanning stages of having a custom tandem built.
Are there any 11 speed tandem groupsets out there?
Looking at groupsets. What are some of the better groupsets available? FSA SLK? Shimano R603? What levers for cable pull disc? Would you go for a gates carbon belt drive for the timing?
