Professional Development for cycling Instructors (CPD)

One National Standard (NS) Instructor outcome is being 'professional'.

This emphasis on professionalism was perhaps a reaction to other cycle training which was (and still is in some places) delivered by untrained volunteers, some non cyclists, by firemen and policemen, pensioners, school staff and others.

The move to NS training meant the creation of a body of highly trained enthusiastic professionals who know how to teach, manage risk and ride a bike. The sector became 'professionalised'

A method of maintaining a skill set amongst any professional group is CPD (continual Professional Development). Whereby skills are regularly refreshed and updated.

(There will be a minimum requirement of 3 hours CPD for inctructors to keep their accreditation. This will be announced when the Instructor Training Organisations are set up early in the new year.)

CPD modules for instructors have been pioneered by Cycle Training UK who have offered courses on Mentor Training, Teaching families, Learning through games, Level 3 refresher, Teaching refresher, Managing risk refresher etc. More info here.

(In fact CTUK will be running a series of courses in January which may be of use to instructors)

It would be useful to find out where gaps exists in CPD training so please use this thread to share ideas for further training which may be of use to you in order to ensure you a delivering the best cycle training possible.

Good point. Sadly I've met some who've lost the 'love' for the job or have just allowed bad habbits to slip back in.

I have done a couple of CPD courses at CTUK and got loads out of it. I am hoping to do some more this January, if my providers pay for it :0)

Now that CTUK is an ITO all CPD modules attended will be recognised as instructors' annual CPD requirement.

These are the modules we are running in January:
Teaching family groups,
Complete Beginners refresher,
Teaching through games and,
Advanced teaching techniques (Maximising Learning)

The courses will take place during April at our training centre in London as follows:

**Mentor Training Day **
Cycle Training schemes should have mentors in place to help with instructor’s professional development. This one day course covers instructor induction, support and appraisal.
Date: Monday 18**th ****April **from 10.00-16.00pm
Cost: £120 per person

**Learning Through Games **
Teaching bike control (Level 1) can be enhanced through using a variety of games.
Instructor’s can share ideas and learn some new games in a fun practical session.
Date: Tuesday 19**th ****April **from 9.30-12.30
Cost: £80 per person

**Special Educational Needs (SEN) **
Instructor’s will understand where they may encounter people with SEN. They will have an overview of the different types of SEN, understand pre and post course assessment activities and develop and share good teaching practices.
Date: Tuesday 19**th ****April **from 13.30-16.30
Cost: £80 per person

**Practical Teaching Refresher **
A dynamic practical module that will enable experienced instructor’s to streamline their teaching and help their trainee’s achieve Bikeability outcomes more quickly and efficiently. The module looks at a variety of teaching methods focusing on making teaching theory exciting, using demonstrations effectively and managing trainee riding time through practical road drills, focusing on Level 2.
Date: Wednesday 20**th ****April **from 9.30-12.30
Cost: £80 per person

**Managing Risk Refresher **
Will draw on instructor’s experience, look at situations they have encountered and develop advance techniques in ensuring that all training is low risk.
Date: Wednesday 20**th ****April **from 13.30-15.30
Cost: £80 per person

can I ask, what the requirements of attending this are? duration of service etc etc
is it intended for council employees or anyone, and as suggested appraisal-- how is that done and is it a recognised qualification amongst other cycle training bodies

Jason, the mentor training course is for experienced (c2 years) instructors who have a role of supporting, inducting, appraising, mentoring new instructors for their scheme. It involves refreshing skills and techniques for offering mentoring support to other instructors . It is a requirement of any bikeability scheme to have a mentoring scheme. Attendees will be issued with CTUK-ITO certification

I did a version of the Mentor day in Coventry I think? I'd been with them about 2 weeks and it is all a blur looking back now. other than it being a fun day. Would defo need to do it again at some point but that'd have to be determined by going and getting acredited properly and delivering some training again.

I still need to contact a local ITO and see what the score is on getting refreshed & acredited...

2 day National Standard Instructor Trainer course (NSIT) - theory
To train people meeting the person specification for an instructor trainer to effectively deliver the National Standard Instructor Training course and assess new instructors in a Post Course Assessment.

Date: Tuesday 11th & Wednesday 12th February 2014 from 9.15am-5.00pm.

CPD Courses for cycle trainers from CTUK

10.00am Tuesday 26th May – 1 day Practical Refresher training day £85

You will become a more efficient Instructor at all National Standard Levels
Fine tunes Risk Management based on instructors current experience and explores advanced teaching skills including:

Using games at L1 to enhance outcomes

Optimise L2 outcomes (Achieving 80/20)
Develop L3 training skills for 1:1 and 1:2 ratio training
Participants receive a free copy CTUK's Games Compendium
9.30am Thursday 4th June Ride Leader - ½ day £45.00

Training for people who wish to move large groups of cyclists on road for leisure, to promote cycling or for large events. It explores route planning, communicating to large numbers as well as looking at the technique for mass riding. Open to competent on-road cyclists as well as cycling instructors.

Saturday 6th June - 1 day Teaching Safe Urban Driving CPC – £85

Explores the content and delivery of Safe Urban Driving course practical module. Understanding that the course focus is on driver outcomes (a problem for many instructors is that they deliver Bikeability training). Please note that participants need to be NSIQ and have a minimum of 2 years experience as an NSI. Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

10.00 am Thursday 11th June - 1 day Internal Quality Assurance – £120.00
