Carbon Frame Respray

  • Have a carbon frame respray project in mind. Have Googled who can do it but not really came up with anything. UTFS here and came up with nowt either.

    Any advice or recomendations?

  • Señor Bear's stripping his Bianchi now for exactly the same reason.

  • Yes I have seen his efforts so far but think I'd rather just find someone that can do it, looks like a lot of hard work!

  • i have done a few carbon frames now, and they are a LOT of work.

Argos cycles will do it, but expect prices to to be £250+

  • Thanks.

The best (only) quote I have found online is through Mercian:

"Carbon frame and fork stove enamelled (at own risk) £200.00"

  • Speak to Colortech, he paints loads of carbon frames. Do the prep work yourself and save a bundle of cash

  • Thanks.

you cant stove a carbon frame it will destroy it

  • How hot is a stove?

The carbon fiber will be fine. But its relationship with the epoxy binder will be heavily stressed at over 150C. Much over 200C, and the frame could start to crumble.

Thats just my educated guess. I'd love to try it, and see.

But how can Mercian even offer this? have they done it before?

  • I must have some CF parts I dont need at home, and we have plenty of ovens in the lab......

    ....mmmmmm

+140c for 20 - 30 mins for stove enamel, some carbon frames have internal plastic lugs.
You can low bake and use 2k paint with no problems, the hardest part of refinishing carbon is getting the old paint off without damage the rest is actually easier than painting most steel frames.

    Ball park fig?

  • This place offers carbon frame respray for £240 - http://www.graphicshack.co.uk/product/Carbon_Fibre_Bike_Frame_Respray_cfbfrefd

  • Are there any success stories on having carbon frames resprayed? I'm thinking about going for it and wondered who's best, how much hassle, etc... I'm happy to pay a pro rather than have a go myself.

  • Have a word with Rourkes in Stoke on Trent, mentions summat on their site about carbon frame prep for painting. Might be worth a go?
