I used to run a 300 lumen when on the front or bombing downhill then drop it to 50-100 lumen when in the pack. Last thing you want is the brightness of a million suns bouncing of the arse of the person in front, especially if they have any retro reflective on them. Screws your night vision and creates shadows for the people in front whereby they cannot see the dimly illuminated road directly in front of them for the super bright road either side.
I'm currently running 90 lux which I reckon is close to what my 300 lumen kicked out but with better light distribution.
