  • In the dry summer months it is often beneficial to let the grass grow a bit longer than usual. This will help it to retain water and prevent yellowing.

  • is this the one that is a mixture of offroad and canals? i can't really remember...

  • That's what the adjustable cutting height on the mower is for.

  • Part of the idea is to let the blades of grass "heal" reducing the increased capillary action you get with fresh cut ends on each blade of grass. Thus it is important to reduce the frequency of cutting as well as increasing the cutting height setting.

No, that's the Killing Me Soft Lea ride. This is all on road.

  • It is the same principle for shaving your legs as well.

  • I can't make this one. Going to see Richard Dawson play. Have fun! Weather forecast is Great.

  • I'm going to have a quick moan: it's a beautiful day (and will be so tonight), it's a lovely route and there's a fair amount of light, it's close-ish to London...basically this would be completely ideal for new riders to get involved with WNKR and yet it's a shame as there probably won't be any new people, or old guard or just seasoned forumgers who've been considering but have just forgotten they take place. That is because I feel we're stuck in this sub-forum ghetto where no-one is reading the thread or seeing the new rides being posted. I know numbers have been a bit thin, but that's definitely not due to leadership, talent, drinking ability or our overall good looks. Which leads me to believe it's the subforum this is all posted in. I personally would like to see the Midweek Evening Ride forum deleted, and the TNRC and WNKR threads put back into the Rides thread, and new rides should pop up in the Rides thread. Because you know, they are rides. The Rides forum is not that busy anyway - surely it would just contribute to people getting out and getting involved with one of the longest running threads and rides on LFGSS? I don't want to name drop velocio yet (as this is quite a bitchy moan - I will be more reasoned at some point) but what do you think? Anyone else with me?

  • I think it's a reasonable question to ask. Even though I've had the pleasure of a couple of these rides in the past, I tend not to seek out the separate sub-forum and so by the time a ride is coming round, I've usually got other stuff preventing me from joining in.

I could come this evening - as you say, the weather is fine and I've actually got no clashing engagements, but I live the other side of London and I'm wondering about heading out into Kent this evening.

  • totally agree dan, and i've been saying the same since this new concept of 'events' came out. we should just re-ignite the original thread and just put the rides there and carry it on like we used to with a list. this new sub forum is crap. end of.
i only usually have a few mins to find the thread and post and that was one of the few threads i kept open and just refreshed. now i have to go to forums, find mid week rides, then find the latest 'event' blah blah. its fucking awful if you ask me.
either that or no one likes the mowing the lawn in jokes all the time ;-)

  • I love the mowing the lawn jokes. My issue is their lack of exposure.

  • either that or no one likes the mowing the lawn in jokes all the time ;-)

    Boo!

  • I personally would like to see the Midweek Evening Ride forum deleted, and the TNRC and WNKR threads put back into the Rides thread

as if to illustrate your point (albeit in reverse), I had completely forgotten that the Rides Forum even existed - but I have to admit I was hoping it would take Al his usual 2 months to find your post and angrily agree with it, thereby illustrating it even more clearly!

  • Who's joking? The lawn mowing stuff is just straight forward good advice.

  • I like the sub-forum layout, it makes sense to me, and it allows out events not to swamp the irregular rides. It took a while to get used to and perhaps the way I use the forum is not typical, I use the "Following" tab as a sort of personalised home page for the site.

But the point is not how I use the forum or what I think of it, it's how others do and whether it is limiting our exposure.

Talking of forum use patterns, should we take this discussion to the main WNKR waffle thread and leave this event thread to more relevant riding/gardening discussion?

  • Yes of course Matt. I just posted here in the first place to see what the regular riders thought. Moving there now...

  • Dan's point is very valid, there's definitely a problem if you split things up too much. A forum as a public place benefits from lots of different people coming into contact with one another, even if they occasionally crash into each other by accident or fight. If there are too many forums for people to look at, and many navigate forums by looking at the actual forums as opposed to accumulator pages like 'Today' (currently not a very powerful set of functions), then they miss things.

  • Back to the bed wetting, more like bed shitting in my case.

I've spent most of last night and today on the white porcelain chair, not eaten yet so I'm going to try and have some fud and see how I feel from there.

  • We're still ok for the bbq round yours tho?
