@Vince: there are New Succes 8 speed brifters (somewhere out there...). Sach New Succes was of level comparable to Campa C-Record.

I didn't say they were low end, just that they would seem low end to anybody used to modern equipment. By any reasonable measure, current Claris is a vast improvement over first generation DuraAce.
