  • That's sort of my point though. They didn't really expect to be in governement, so could promise what they want, with no fear of actually having to follow through with it.

Could UKIP or Green have really done what their manifesto promised, if they've got in to power this time? I highly doubt it.

  • To be fair, any party expecting to get into power could do the same. Take a look at what the any party has promised in an election campaign and what they have actually delivered.

Now to be fair to UKIP and the Green Party, both put forward what they claimed to be a fully costed manifesto so it could easily be argued that they could do what they promised. Certainly as likely as any of the more major parties including the Conservatives.

To be even fairer to the Green Party, this is a fully democratic party. Candidates, leaders, policies, etc is all decided by the members of the party and not an executive function. Very little is devolved to sub-groups within the party and certainly not without a clear mandate. Therefore, if the Green Party had taken power, it would have been their absolute intention to deliver on that manifesto as a promise. Could they have done so? Well that would be hard to predict, but they would have tried. This isn't a party that makes up election promises and policies just to get votes or highlight issues or because it knows they don't have to mean anything. Even knowing they wouldn't get into power, they still created a manifesto that they would want to follow through on and therefore a lot more credible than those of the other parties.
