  • Try and buy turnip greens in London tho', almost impossible... In Spain we eat the greens and give the turnips to the pigs...

  • Any recipe ideas for using leftover bits of filo pastry? I made a pastry thing with courgette, peppers, tomato purée, goats cheese and spring onion. It was delicious.

But the pastry was some proper Turkish stuff and came in big weird oval sheets so I had to cut off loads of edge bits which I have in a big bowl.

Anything quick and easy I could do with the scraps?

  • I usually settle for tenderstem broccoli to replace the turnip tops, not the same, but close enough.

  • Borough Market? I've bought beetroot tops there a couple of times.

  • Place on a tray, cover in butter and sugar, cook until crispy. Take bowl, add fruit compot, cream, ice cream, nuts, chocolate (or whatever else you like) and make an uber-sundae?

  • The Portuguese deli on Atlantic Road (the one opposite Argos, not the white person's deli) sometimes has them but their tiny window of seasonality is a bit of an issue... We grow them all year round in Galicia...

I'm also told Garcia on Portobello Road gets them as well as a couple of the fruit and veg stallholders, I've never seen them there tho'...

  • I get sprout tops now and again, damn delicious. They come in my white person's organic box veg.

  • Well since the discussion is already on impossible finds, anywhere you can get courgette flowers or fresh porcini (in respective seasons obv)?

I've tried to track down courgettes flowers in Borough market a couple of times, but apparently you have to camp outside to score them! Any farmers market or actual farm that has them in summer?

  • I grow courgettes and nick the occasional flower bt have never seen them for sale here. ^^^Was wondering if swiss or rainbow chard would wilt down a little better than the spring greens i used. The wicked grocerin Herene Hill has a load.

  • Worth trying new covent garden for that kinda stuff. It's mostly wholesale companies, but wear a smile and you can get lucky from time to time.

  • When courgette flowers are in season the Farmers market on Stoke Newington High Street on Saturday mornings outside here: http://www.stpaulswesthackney.org/ has them.

  • First time to Lo's Noodle Factory, W1D 6EZ, despite hearing about it years and years ago.
Got a pack of cheung fun (didn't have to get 6) and 6 char siu bao. Hello breakfast.
    Fast, fun fun! +blowfish

  • Sounds awesome! Do you know what time they open? could be worth a morning detour..

  • Not sure, but let me know if you find out!

  • They were selling them in the farmers market in Brixton on Sunday

  • Wait, what? Already?

  • the fruit and veg man in Herne hill used to have turnip tops i think - great fruit and veg stall

  • Yeah this weekend just gone

  • this is happening RIGHT NOW.

  • Shit, how had I not found this thread yet? Ace poncing. I shall join in soon.

  • don't get too happy, herne hill green grocer, ye olde bakery, and the shops from the kebab place down are in danger from Network Rail renovations and removal as much as the shops down in brixton under the arches are.
Supposedly everyone in Herne Hill is dying for more restaurants and bars, rather than the lovely community of shops they already have..

  • on a happier note, will be doing dumplings at silk road in camberwell tomorrow.
Apart from Mama Lan's in brixton market/clapham, anyone know of any other places where I can scratch my fried dumpling itch?
When I was in Melbourne there were places that just sold dumplings, either fried or steamed, I'm looking for someplace like that...

  • Yo - Camy's - the place my mum took me to as a kid for a quick fix. http://www.au.timeout.com/melbourne/restaurants/venues/470/camy-shanghai-dumpling-and-noodle-restaurant
I haven't found a place yet in London but walked past this the other day

Alternatively, buy from the shops and cook yourself. Currently this is 80% of my freezer.

  • Jen Cafe on the corner of Newport court chinatown is my favorite they also do a great chicken dish can't remember the name comes with spring onion ginger sauce stuff ace and they do bubble tea stuff too yay!!!
