So I finally got round to taking a pic of my bodging. I would have lined them up vertically but the mudguard fitting isn't long enough. There's plenty of space behind to fit it though which I do intend to do eventually.
@TM, I agree with you about the bolts, they're just long enough but nothing more. Don't fancy involving anything between the pieces of metal, least of all squishy plastic!
