Before you splash out, have you made sure you have reduced your drag in every other way? Like helmet choice, tightness of clothing, body position etc? I can't afford nice deep rims so have tried to eliminate drag elsewhere first. Maybe watch all the Win Tunnel videos with a pinch of salt. Looks like even the correct shoe covers could save seconds.

I use 88mm tubs for racing. Mainly because I couldn't afford a decent disc wheel at the time of purchase. They're fine for indoor use. If I'm racing outdoors and its a bit windy it's probably a good idea to have some shallower rims too.
If you're only going to be training, what is the point of spending more than you have too? I train on heavier, less aero wheels. It makes me feel faster when I use my nice wheels for racing. :)

The thing is I've just picked up a track bike with an old HED disc and a tired Mavic/Campag hub front wheel.
They both will do the job I guess but the disc is a little extreme for training so I'm probably going to sell them off and pick up a newer set of wheels.
I'll only be riding indoors at Derby so deep sections don't worry me.
I'm just after a half decent set of wheels that won't break the bank and look good on my T1. -

Ah is that why you were asking how much the HED's worth? You may regret selling it.
Maybe ask about if anyone here has used @varno's 85mm deep sections...

Yeh I'm not sure if it's worth much.
I've only got a budget to buy one set of wheels at the moment so I don't want to get anything too crappy. -

I'd be really tempted by the HED myself, but it depends if I can raise some funds, and we'd need to have a look at value too I guess.

Not sure where you're based but you're more than welcome to have a look. I could ping you a few pics if you're interested.

If you want deeps just buy planet x ones. Can't be beaten for price and performance.
IMO deep rims are massive overkill (especially if you're not racing)- I hardly ever use my disc/deep front wheelset for racing. Pretty much always race and train on my mavic reflex / dura ace hubs wheel set. If I had to have one set of wheels it would be them - stiff, fast, easy/cheap to repair.
I've use an 88mm generic rim on my TT bike (front with genuine FFWD disc rear) and have had no issues but was wondering if anyone's got any experience of using 88mm generic wheels on the track? Only for SQT's for now but maybe a little racing.
Budget as ever is my restriction.
Cheers Jon.
