  • No that's a Med restaurant now. Manzes down the market is still there. There's a good chippy on Wood St but it's not as good as Bonners between Blackhorse rd and the market.

  • @Dammit
    If it's a shared wall I think you'll need a PWA.

  • This should really be in a thread called "owning someone else's home"

My mum did one of those schemes where a company buys a flat for you, and you get a lifetime tenancy rent-free - on death or moving into full time care accommodation they get their flat back.
The owners have put her flat on the market as something called a "life tenancy investment" - i.e. you buy it at a considerably reduce price than if it had vacant posession, she gets to keep living there just as before, and when she dies or moves into care the owner can recoup their investment.
I would quite like to be the person that buys it, so that a) I have a nest egg for my retirement, and b) my mum would be much happier knowing her family were her landlords instead of some faceless investment company.
The trouble is nobody appears to offer a mortgage for this type of investment. I don't suppose anyone knows of a finance product that might lend me the cash?

  • ^^Niall that's got to be a question best put to a financial advisor surely? Certainly sounds doable, but you need someone who knows exactly what they are doing.

    ^Nice joinery.

A wall in my flat, this morning:

  • ^ Switchplate is crooked...

    ;)

  • That's only on for the plastering, when he's done I'll leave bare wires that you twist together after licking your fingers - it's a much more authentic experience than simply flicking a switch.

  • Are you just buy it, then leave it in a cupboard gathering dust?

  • And then leave it behind when he moves?

  • Some of the new plumbing is just a couple of mm too high meaning I can't relay the floorboards :/

  • Did some very hungover flat viewings today and have put in an offer on place. Its currently set out as a studio but can be reconfigured to a 1 bed by either moving the kitchen or converting the loft.

Keep everything crossed. Its going to be a long weekend.

  • The owners of the place I'm buying have rung to say they'll be leaving most of the furniture and whitegoods behind as they have everything they need in their place abroad.

Not all to my liking but very handy as I'm coming out of furnished rental.

  • Laying floorboards is such a ballache, but I'd rather do hundreds than fix a leaky bath tap connector without a basin wrench.

Using pump pliers to turn it 1/6 of a turn at a time whilst lying on your back is a fecking nightmare.

On top of that, I don't have the right washer so I've had to bodge it with a sausage of PTFE tape and will have to do the whole rigmarole again tomorrow with the right parts.

    Nggh.

  • Who have you got stripping your brickwork? Are you re-pointing too, or is it ok as is?

  • Nice. I'd feel a lot safer walking up these than your old ones!

  • They're pretty steep, but less steep than the old ones were. I can't remember which way round, but the angles are 42, 45 and 48 degrees and one is building regs, one is the old one and one is the new staircase.

  • 42 degrees is the max under building regs.
