  • The Irish singing in the Waverley Arms in Nunhead used to be quite the attraction. It generally broke out when the grimly monosyballic conversation of a Thursday night had petered out and nobody could be arsed to punch the 50p destroying juke box into submission. You could see the look of horror on the face of the occasionals who had just mooched through the door, commented on how peaceful it was and ordered up a round. Sharon would start in a low pitch and start winding up. In Gaelic at first but inevitable falling into English when she couldn't remember the words and then mostly just making it up. I reckon some of it were the script from last nights Corrie. All through the pub everyone sat stock still, not daring to make eye contact with anyone else. That's save the lads out the back playing pool who decided the only way to sink anything was to strike the cue ball with near ballistic impact.

  • It used to be my local too, back when Tony Blair was popular. Definitely worth a visit, had some cracking nights in there.
