Used to use borax for silversmithing (mixed to a paste) which was annoying and went everywhere except where you wanted it. Nowadays there are some great fluid fluxes for jewellers which are so easy to use by comparison.
Borax is also good for killing ants. They carry it into the nest for reasons which are beyond me.
