  • For anyone interested, we are building the largest bouldering centre in Europe in Burnt Oak, Edgware. The Arch has been very successful in Bermondsey and Fred Stone the director decided to spend the money on another one. It'll be up and running in about 10 weeks.

The height is about the same at the Biscuit factory, but this time we are building all the way to the ceiling, around 4.5 meters. On the plans I saw lots of slab and overhang of various degrees, a massive cave, some wierd pillar / stack type structures and a gym area, plus a cafe and outdoor seating. So far we have just built the showers and the toilets. I'll keep updating as things progress.

  • YEAH BOIIIII! My endz!

I have to ask though, why Burnt Oak? It's not really the most....sporting of areas, having spent most of my teenhood causing chaos there.

    Edit: Really excited about this.

Build it and they will come. It mainly depends, I think, on finding the venue. Land in London is expensive and scarce, so Fred snapped this up.

Yes, Burnt Oak seems a little out of the way compared to Bermondsey, which is in reach of the commute of many more people, and also near a gym. However I think this will be a destination, perhaps more people will make the trip at weekends or when they have time off for a longer climb. Also, I have spoken to some of the residents in the block above the space and they are really excited about the idea. Some people have no idea what a "climbing wall" is but like the sound of it. The arch does a fair bit of teaching with kids so that might take a bigger role here, it will be something fun in an area with tesco and a merc garage and not much else. I'm optimistic.
