  • Is it possible to cut a new thread on top of another one on a rear hub axle?

I have a Royce hub and it needs specific size track nuts, which cost a fortune. Would it be safe to cut a new 10x1 thread, so it can fit DA track nuts? If it is, who in London can do this?

    No.

If the original axle thread is M10×1.0, the Dura Ace ones should go straight on. If it's really 10mm×26TPI (Campagnolo ones are), an M10×1.0 nut will go on about 2 turns and then start to bind. Force it past that and you'll wreck the axle, the nut or both. First thing to do is to get a thread gauge and find out what you're dealing with. If the Royce axles really are 1.0mm pitch and the axle and nuts are not damaged and they are still tight, it suggests a tolerance problem. In that case, and only in that case, you can run an M10×1.0 die down the axle to cut it down to size. You can't cut a 26TPI thread with a 1.0mm pitch die (or tap) or vice versa, you just end up with an awful mess.

Of course, doing all that will be more expensive than just buying the Royce nuts to start with, in the hope that Royce hold their tolerances across production batches.

  • Thanks for that info. Cliff said the thread is M10x1, so I thought DA would fit, they didn't. Then I bought VeloSolo tracknuts - the tracknut went on about 2 turns and that's it. I've lost one of the original royce tracknuts and the one I still have goes on both sides without any resistance, all the way, as it should. I would've bought a replacement, but last time I did that, it took about 4 weeks to receive the order.
