  • Chelsea Players who have become managers

Tommy Docherty - player manager - did well. Formed basis of the team with whom Sexton won the Cup. Resigned after six years. Went on to manage a few lesser sides.

Eddie McCreadie - took over at a tough time when cost of new stand spiralled and almost killed the club. Hugely popular. Resigned when car he was promised did not materialised. Mopved to the US and managed there, presumably with a car.

Ken Shellito. One season at the nadir of Chelsea's fortunes. Left when Chelsea were facing relegation. Went to Cambridge United and then to Malaysia.

John Hollins. Won Full Members Cup. Took Chelsea to 6th place and then was sacked as he took them down towards relegation. Almost three years. Managed various minor teams such as Crawley and QPR.

David Webb. Short stint replacing the atrocious Porterfield. Picked club up off floor and delivered to a safe 11th place. Not reappointed as Hoddle came in. Went on to Brentford, Yeovil and Southend.

Glenn Hoddle (player manager). Three years. Brought in fresh new talent that would be back bone of side for next decade. Left for England and lunacy.

Ruud Gullit. (player manager) just under two years. Suddenly sacked. Brought radical changes and improved on Hoddle. Suddenly sacked and went to Newcastle.

Gianluca Vialli (player manager) Two and a half years. Brought great success. Suddenly sacked by Bates for Ranieri. Went on to Watford and beyond.

Roberto di Matteo Came in as caretaker manager. Won CL and FA Cup. Sacked and went on to Schalke.

And so what do we learn from that??

Not much really. Former players are attractive as managers but don't necessarily achieve much. Few go on to manage at the same level afterwards.

    I think Liverpool needs Gerard.
