  • Hi all,

I managed to get my hands on this beautiful Nicolai Argon Fixie frame. Im going to start building her up when i get a headset and seatpost. In the mean time, enjoy the photos :)

  • Always wanted a go on a Nicolai :) that does look like it will live up to the rep of being stiffer than the old Kleins, looking forward to watching the build up and ride report.

  • This looks amazing(ly over engineered) and like it could make a really fun biek.

  • ^I agree - Looks like it'll be fun. Am I correct in saying the dropouts only seem to offer about 1" of adjustment?

  • i think a little more, however those dropouts are heavy as shit.

going to be a fun bike :)

  • woah, not sure about beautiful but its definitely burly as fuck!

  • This frame makes no sense, but it's definitely very cool! Those stays are awesome.

Are these technically called drop outs because you can drop the rear wheel out without derailing the chain? As opposed to (track) fork ends where you have to first get the chain of the rear cog. What would @mdcc_tester have to say about this...

  • That's awesome! Was looking at them a wee bit back. Where'd you find it and what's the size? T

  • size large, i picked it up from nicolai UK, someone has ordered one, then backed out, managed to get it at a really good price :)

  • Very nice. Don't think they're listed in their 2015 catalogue anymore some reason. First dibs on when you want to sell ;) T

  • the Argon Fixie was never an official frame, it was a "custom" variant of the Argon Road. burly as hell, yet still pretty light :)

  • Is it true that you can open up the drive side drop out/fork end area so you can even run a belt drivetrain?

  • It appears to be a bolt through on the drive side dropout to seat stay, they do belt drive for the MTB frames so it looks positive for a belt drive.

awaits answer or photo close up from Isotropic :)

  • you are correct. it has a small piece of material which is removable above the rear drop out. took me a while to realise why that was important when the nicolai chap told me about it :P. when i can afford one, and when i am 100% comfortable with my gear ratio i may be forced to invest :D

edit, you can see the removable piece of material in pic 4, will try to get some nice close ups later.

edit edit: worth pointing out these frames can take discs too :D

  • Looks like a BMW gangster kind of geometry?

Neat though, I'm into their MTB stuff and saw they made a nice road frame. Been searching for an alloy framed Ellsworth track (650/700c) for years, they very occasionally pop up

  • So good, always had a soft spot for Nicolai.

  • build update 1.

i was stung by the good ol sram omnium issue of it rubbing on the frame. as a result i had to machine a bit away, and reduce the profile of the bolts. also the fork steerer isnt long enough, so i need new forks. irrespective, here is the build so far:

  • Looks terrible, sell me it ;)

  • Nice simple colour way, black white silver, looks fab.

The mountain bikes are love/hate with the industrial looks and the hardtails have a rep for being brutal to riders.
How does it ride ? any flex/give in the rear ? by rep alone that should be a fast bike off the line.
If a bit savage try a seatpost shim and dropping a few sizes in post diameter for some ass comfort.

  • Chub and saddle rub me the wrong way, but nice build in general. Glad it didn't turn out looking like a hybrid like the red one.

  • That's wicked!

  • Dat headtube

    Swoon

  • Thinking on this a bit more; I'm curious to see how the sliding dropouts with the break for belt drive take the stresses of skidding.

Do keep us posted on how this rides!

  • its stiff. really stiff! the sliding drop out, belt drive slot, does not make it soft at all. also its really fun ride :D

as for skidding, because ive upped my ratio to 48-13, i cant really tell because its hard to skid at the moment, i need to train a bit first. infact, i have had to put a front break on just for safety, photos of that in a bit.

  • Love Nicolai stuff, sub'd.

This is one of the very few builds that a Chub looks ok on too.
