I would recommend buying one anyway.
I've got one of the Salter ones with two separate probes - which is useful for monitoring core temp and external temp.
If I was in London I'd happily lend you mine! -

Currently in Hoi An - so far the food I've eaten on this holiday has been mostly amazeballs. Will do a pic fest when I get back

I bought one for the opposite reason, needed to know what the max temp possible was. I'm in south London and commute to central if you want to grab it, although they're pretty cheap from Lakeland.

Thanks for the offer. I saw how cheap they were and I've bought a Heston Blumenthal Salter one and we'll see how we get on.

All the rib talk reminded me I had one in the freezer.
4 hour braised in an iron casserole at 150c then finished in oven

I became totally obsessed with the milky dumplings with sweet pork and a quails egg from the little cart by the market, see also: coconut donuts

Got creative over the weekend, Italian flag tricolored ravioli with ricotta and butternut squash stuffing, in a light walnuts and sage butter sauce.
Given the date of today and the color of Mexican flag, I'd say these could be a good Cinco de Mayo celebrative dish as well!
Effort was well paid back by taste and pleasing visual effect.

Going to Romania in July for a few days and going to try and sneak somewhere else by train for a few more days afterwards. Thoughts at this stage are Istanbul or somewhere in Greece or Croatia. Istanbul is the fave. Thoughts on where and what to eat? Or for that matter somewhere a bit less obvious than Istanbul?

^^^^^hoi An is amazing for food.

why not istanbul, it's a fabulous place.
sea of marmara, any of the plethora of fish restaurants on the european side waterfront (kennedy cd, or road), or asian side kadikoy (bagdat cd) as far east as kartal, opposite the adalar islands, even the islands themselves
i favour the asian side as that's where our business premises are, and fewer touristique places
i say these and not the ones in the isthmus, as that waterside is more polluted

why not zoidberg?

Go to Istanbul and eat everything. Go to the spice bazaar to taste as many pieces of turkish delight as you can for free and bring back as many different spices as you can (haggled of course). Lots of good seafood restaurants too. Istanbul is one of my favourite places purely for the history.
Other less obvious foodie paradise is Alacati on the aegean coast. It's a bit turkish, a bit greek and has vineyards.

Anyone watch that Italy on a Plate (or something similar sounding) thing with Andrew Graeme-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli? I know it's essentially The Trip sans irony but they've been doing them a while, they have a nice genuine friendship vibe going on and some of the food (and art) looks great. One of the dishes that I really dug the look of was a really super simple Orecchiette with turnip tops cooked in garlic and chilli. That's literally all it was, four ingredients. I've made it a few times now but with blanched spring greens in place of the turnip tops. I served it to 8 people last night with the courgette, rocket, basil and parmesan salad from the Polpo book on the side and it went down a storm.

Yes - that is one of my fave cookery shows. Locatellis Sicily cookbook might be worth a look for you.
I quite liked two greedy Italians as well
Basically food programmes in Italy

Went to puglia last year and ate a lot of orrechiette and turnip tops, it is so simple but so beautiful to eat.
Love the two greedy italians.
Does anyone have a thermometer you can put in the oven to check it's at the right temperature? If so, could I borrow it for a day or an evening?
We've got a new cooker and it seems to be a bit overenthusiastic and we'd like to check that before we kick up a fuss.
