Telly money.
For the smaller clubs the money is a big draw. The extra games may mean they finish 14th rather than 9th.
For the bigger clubs the money is mostly irrelevant. The extra games may mean they finish 5th-8th instead of fighting for 3rd/4th.
It's also a good competition for weeding out crap managers and racist clubs.

It was when we were good enough to be in it. When it was a straight knockout competition. Steve Chettle header against Bayern Munich to pinch an away goal. Home leg didn't go so well...
That was the last time we'll ever play them in a competitive match.
