  • Old wiring may well be compliant with the code that was in force at the time, but that does not mean it is adequate now.
    When I was a kid I lived in a 300 year old timber-framed cottage out in the sticks. Back in 1948 that village was connected to the electricity supply, and to get people using that electricity the house each house was fitted with one socket.
    40 years later and several additions to the house and all the other sockets in the house were all running off that original 1948 spur. It was an accident waiting to happen, so the place got a complete rewire.

    (several other issues were found, to be fair, such as the lighting circuit in one room that somehow bypassed the main circuit breaker for the whole house. Or the socket with live and neutral reversed.)
