You spend enough on bikes, why not just buy a TT bike and be done with it?
I've put a hold on the 'Classic' bar swap and I'm likely to be ordering a set of the X bars for the Shiv instead. Either the Shiv bars or the older TriRig bars can go on the Stealth or ebay.

Sounds legit

What's the claimed watt saving between the old and new?
-
• #430
^^ Deep (like credit card debt).

~ 20g of drag, whatever that is. It's the functional differences like no steerer cutting I like. That and not being in a 'recalled' state helps.

"20 grams of drag reduction means 10 seconds at 25 mph over 40 kilometers"
0.1 lbs (50 g) of drag (at 30 mph) = 0.5 s/km = 5 W = 0.005 m^2 CdA = 0.0005 Crr
If that's right, then my 12hr TT will be 11 hours and 58 minutes :)

Hmm... $1000 for 0.8mi

Just pedal a bit faster.
-
• #435
I've worked out that with the exponential effects of air resistance it's just not worth me pedaling faster. ;)

Slicing off the unnecessary protuberances is the real deal and the most honest choice.

Who needs arms anyway? Just change gears with a mouth-tube thing.

Laziness.

Well, in reference to hippy I was meaning he doesn't need his penis and balls.

I need to spend on maintainance on the the fixed, the cargobike, and the fatbike, plus the 29er is going SS monster CX. Null
Its frankly boring spending on money bikes i already own. But needs must.
Kinda tempted to to build china carbon special TT bike still. Ultimately it would mean less wear on the road bike. Which is the nice bike. So it would actually save me money.

Thanks. Prices will go up later on as we update the equipment and that'll go on the website (http://www.aero-coach.co.uk) but yes it is cheap when you consider the cost of hiring the track (and personnel) for riding.
I'll chuck in a couple of packs of ATS System if you want ;)

Seriously tempted.
Assuming that I would primarily be interested in optimising my position on the bike for Ironman racing (I don't have the luxury of testing multiple equipment options), to what extent do you work on other bike-fit issues such as comfort, optimisation of power and the ability to run of the bike etc?
After some minor equipment changes I find myself pretty uncomfortable on my TT bike and so I'm planning a bike fit anyway, but should I look at aero-coach as a fancy bike fit with optimised aerodynamics, or should I look at it as an addition to a separate bike fit?
-
• #443
Personally I'd never consider a TT/Triathlon bike fit that didn't take into account aerodynamics. A decent bike fit (scherrit) is gonna be £150-200 anyway, might as well go with Xav and know you'll be faster.
-
• #444
Well that's exactly what I mean. I would probably have gone to Mike Taylor (Lynn Biddulph's brother I think?), and he has plenty of experience fitting people to TT bikes, but eyeballing aeros is very different to measuring them.
Given that I need a proper bike fit anyway, and if aero-coach essentially covers wider bike fit issues in addition to the aeros then it makes £350 a no brainer!
-
• #445
It must be really hard fitting someone for ironman, as it's such a compromise between wanting aeros and needing comfort.
Having worked out an estimate of my CDA (0.24) and tested I can put a decent amount of power (297 watts for a 10 - big woop I know) in my current position I've dropped the front end by 20mm, as my position looks very upright in the pictures of a race I did a few weeks ago, and it doesn't seem too extreme to do, will test on Sunday over a long ride, a test threshold session on Tuesday and then again on the tt course.
Hopefully it doesn't go as badly as my last attempt at making myself more aero in which I couldn't hit 200w in the aerobars for a half IM!

Steve Irwin went sub-20:00 on about 320W, so you just need to shave about 0.07m2 off your CdA without losing any power and you'll be quite quick :-)
-
• #447
@mdcc_tester as I have no idea what that really means I'll aim for that then ;)
Hopefully between some faster wheels and some tweaks to my position there should be some quick wins, and hopefully Thursday wasn't a freak performance, maybe the pre race "boosting" was the trick...
-
• #448

It means losing just over a quarter of your total drag. Doesn't sound that likely :-)
-
• #449
Yes absolutely - it's a whole system optimisation type deal, so if you have specific issues (ie. running off the bike for triathletes) then we look at that during your session. I do bike fits on people as well as "aero fits", but my bike fits are mad expensive/intricate so normally reserved for pro teams etc.

Hasn't Steve Irwin gone sub 19 off ~320 watts?
Fecking tempted to get full TT bars for the Felt. The Enve SES Clip-ons are well expensive. I already have a splitter for my rear brake cable Outer, and I'm running Di2. So the swap from road bars would be resonably painless. But I'm proper lazy With these Things. Meh.
