There must be some cheaper Chinese jobs you could pick up...
Oh wait...

You replaced the pistons, at a guess went to the biggest over size ;) Have recently bought 4 forged pistons for a crossflow/pre cross flow cross that were made by carillo for 200 inc vat. That is, to me, cheap. A ford pre crossflow engine can make a few BHP less that the lotus engine, just through using modern materials and better tollerances. The Lotus doesn't get that jump as it already had the close tolerances and better meterials.
Never used running in oils myself, just used cheap 20w 50/ 15w 40 mineral oils to flush the bores or anywhere that had had machining then sub 50mile oil and filter change then a 500 mile change. Then use the oil I would use normally. That fear of doing something wrong is normal. The first change is so quick as I use assembly lube, so the first oil is full of that.

Only time I have ever used SAE30 oil was a diesel oil in a citroen bx and beetle and only then as I got £40 for 40 quid.
PSi sounds fine, pressure is low on a hot idling engine. It is how the pressure is derived.

Pistons are 60 thou over. Forged pistons were about 600 quid! That's about 100 per bop and I had to draw the line somewhere.
I've done about 450 miles so far and everything seems good. The tappets are are a bit noisy, but I will adjust them at the outlaws on Friday.
I cut my finger open with a fishing knive yesterday, so it may be difficult. Managed to keep blood off the steering wheel on my way to a&he, though - small victories.

Wow, in my defence I had no choice as the crossflow block and crank is stronger that the pre cross flow the problem I had was rods and pistons to get the deck right with the pre crossflow 1500 gt head. Was told by the guy I got them from that ton a piston is the going rate as they can be made so easily by cnc machine.
Are you sticking with miller oils? http://www.millersoils.co.uk/pdf/automotive/ZDDP.pdf
Oh and get these for tappet adjustment
They make life so much easier. -

Really fancy an old Pajero or something like that, there are some beautiful 4WD vehicles out here... I'm planning on doing some beach camping so gonna need something that can handle the dunes on the islands of Moreton Bay...

He said "Pajero". Ha!

So, with the help of a low hanging sign in a car park, I recently made some modifications to my van, a sort of DIY spoiler at the front to try and break up some of that dirty air. Has anyone made any similar modifications? More importantly, does anyone have any tips for unmodifying it?

Plenty of interest in my car, it's all going on.
Now I'm really starting to second guess whether I've made the right decision on the new car. Deep down I know I have, but it's the thought of buying a car I haven't driven. I know it's going to be fine but I'm wondering how much slower it's going to be or feel.
I spent so many years driving high powered cars but only owning under-powered but amazing at cornering cars, so I was so glad to finally be behind the wheel of something you didn't have to wring the neck of. I'm taking a step backwards in terms of straight line performance, so I'm hoping everything else makes up for it.
It does help that it sounds similar to this:

What are you planning to chop it in for? Why no test drive?

I'm buying another MX5 which is much more suitable for trackdays. I did a few trackdays in mine, and as fun as it is, it's frustrating. To get it up to spec, I'd have to spend at least £1.5k. The car I'm buying has been built by a mate in Cornwall, it's making almost the same power as mine, but instead of being forced induction, it's on ITBs, big cams, and exhaust.
I've seen the car a bunch of times, I know the condition it's in, and I've been passenger, but I've never driven it myself. I've lusted after it for a while and when my mate finally decided he wanted to sell it to fund other projects he has going on, I knew I had to have it. It was built first and foremost for thrashing around a track, and he has used it for that for quite a while and it has proven to be very reliable and good at what it was built to do.
To me, it was a no-brainer to send mine off to a new person who is more interested in b road blasting and motorway cruising, which mine does very well indeed.

How long till we get a post asking how to remove bogged cars from sand with a rapidly incoming tide? Go for a drive along Fraser island and you'll see plenty of rusty shells at low tide.
Only Pajero to get is a SWB 3 door or just get a Toyata SURF 4Runner

Sounds ideal :-)

NH - would this one pass track day noise tests? I seem to recall you had to put a can over your exhaust because of this?
(I got told my car, at 84 decibels, was "shamefully quiet").
-
• #23166
Considering your track day aspirations, are you looking to get a spare set of hoops with some track rubber? Cheaper in the long run if you're trashing road tyres.
You're cars not quiet, it's just modern, like a current F1 car ;)
-
• #23167
Yeah, as it's naturally aspirated it will be quieter, turbos quieten exhaust noise, and superchargers make them louder. Mine was also extra loud as it only has a backbox as a silencer, everything else is straight pipe.
Yours does need to be louder! Have you considered a screamer pipe?
-
• #23168
It's got two straight through silencers, but the turbo is basically a huge bung in the exhaust.
Induction noise is significantly deeper with the larger diameter (but shorter) pipework up front.
Tyres - yes, had thought of that, might pick some new wheels up for that purpose if I do more trackdays. Helmet of my own is probably the priority.

I'm thinking of buying a Mercedes 190E. Any reason why I shouldn't? I've always thought they were beautiful cars and the thought of having one for £700 - £2500 is quite tempting.

Ha! My gf's favourite place in the world is Moreton Island so we'll be doing a few trips over there as well as Stradbroke...
Other than that, I have no idea what I'm doing... Nissan Patrol is a bit sexy too, seen a few of those beasts rolling around...

• #23171
Got to be the Landcruiser.
-
• #23172
Or the LM002.
-
• #23173
Land Cruisers are on the list too, problem is people love them so much they tend to hang onto them... We shall see...
-
• #23174
Ooh, yeah again, short wheelbase nissan Patrol. It's a reliable Ford Bronco but be prepared for every landcruiser driver asking if you need a tow. There's proper 4x4 rivalry in QLD.
Last time I was home there was a good 80 series with dual tanks (mega range -1500klm+) and roof mounted spotties for $5000 aud and 60 series can be had for cheaper. Bonus is you can pretty much fix anything with a large hammer and some duct tape.
