9 speed won't be a screw-on block. If it's shimano it'll be a Hyperglide, which is 8/9/10 compatible. Not sure you'll be able to get an 11 on there though. Rear derailleurs tend to be speed independent (again, not sure about 11 speed) as all the cable pulling is done by the shifters, so you can mix and match quite happily.
