Ghibli, how d'you get that vignette/soft focus/distortion effect?
-

Spot. Fucking. On.
Gonna watch it now.

In these particular photos the look is due to the lens (and the choice of aperture setting since the softening effect and aberrations are linked to the aperture value)- the first version of Pentax 85mm "soft" (135). On other lenses I use sometimes the Softar filters, but their effect differs and is not really comparable to this lens. If you are curious about the Softar I could dig up an example or two to post.

Yea, please do.
Got a roll of it in my L35AF as well right now, though I'm sort-of saving it for brutally sunny days.

Thanks. Those old soft focus lenses are great, hard to find now.

Those old soft focus lenses are great
I think I never "got" these.
In the examples above (no offence Ghibli) I think it doesn't look good at all, the outer areas of the image that are blurred do not appear calm to me but rather fidgety, or like they're swirling around the center.I would love to have a play with these "DC" lenses Nikon did (actually they still make them today, pretty pricey though), like the 135mm f/2 DC...

It's a matter of aesthetic so I am not offended at all.

As a rule all old lenses are (much) more compromised compared to their modern equivalents - simply there is technology today in design and manufacturing that was undreamt of for the most part of 20th century.
But precisely in those optical compromises (and the nature of films) lie part of image's character, and that can be used as an artistic tool. I am not interested to produce images akin to scientific registration of reality as most modern equipment strive to. If I want to see reality as it is I can just look out of the window, why bother to take pictures besides sentimentality?

Well_is_it recommended the Olympus XA series which if I had seen beforehand I would have diregarded immediately just on the looks, and despite not having the fastest lens around they appear to actually take some lovely shots.
Despite saying this 5 months ago, I picked up one of these today for £8 (has a little flash as well) . They are so small!
And a beat up fujinon w 35mm 3.5 for £3.
I'm on a placement out in southend for 4 weeks with no camera (an effort to try and pack light). The local Mind charity shop came to the rescue!

Good find! they go for way more than that on ebay etc. They make amazing pictures, I wish they were slightly less fiddly to use tho. And also that mine stopped randomly jamming when I wind on :(
Talking bargains I got these for ¥800 (about £4.50) the other day, I only wanted the mz7 "for my girlfriend" but basically giving away Pentax SPs is the only way to get rid of them here I guess (I now have two and both came with things I wanted that were already underpriced).

I still have a old minolta dimage scan elite f2900 back at home. It takes pretty good scans, even sharper than those that come of of my konica minolta dimage scan elite 5400. I requires a free pci slot because it needs an SCSI card, which i think i still have. So only a scsi connection, no usb. With vuescan it will work on the current windows os. Anyone interested?
Picture i took with a minolta autocord (japanese rolleicord) in Iran.

I also have an ancient Minolta Dimage scanner, I don't remember which model - it may well be Scan Elite I!
It was always such a pain and slow to use... but very sharp. I haven't tried it in over a decade... -
