  • Set out to do a gorgeous sunny 80km today. Got back having done 50km.

Cut it short because I found a big ol' jackdaw sitting in the middle of the road, staggering around and unable to fly properly. I rode up the next hill so I could get phone signal, called the RSPCA, rode back down the hill to the nearest farm to scrounge up a box, poked some holes in it with my multitool, spent 15 minutes sliding all over the road in cleats trying to corral the bird into a corner so I could box it up, then rode back up the hill one-handed with the bird under my arm to get phone signal again. Waited there for an hour (in the sun!) until a nice lady from the RSPCA came to pick him up.

Jackdaws are hardly a rare bird, but he was beautiful and obviously in distress. I figure nature gives so much joy to me, it's nice to give something back. I like to think he might have a fighting chance now, rather than getting flattened by some dickhead in a BMW.

Not a great ride for my body, perhaps, but certainly good for my soul. :)
