  • Ha I hadn't noticed that!

  • Ha ha! Yeah, it's pretty amazing following my mates who still live there on Strava. Used to be 10 miles:1000ft elevation standard.

  • did stratford to hampton court and back yesterday, out in the sun for 5 / 6 hours lovely weather, all the way from battersea to hampton along the thames

  • Beautiful pictures

  • Wet, windy and not exactly what I'd dressed for. #Characterbuilding-ish

  • Saturday:
    High Wycombe to Guildford
Highlight: guy on a fancy roadbike overtaking me with the quip 'i'm the same as you today' and showing me a loose cable/di2 wire
    Night out in Guildford

    Sunday:
    Guildford to Wycombe
Getting carried away in the crazy tailwinds for the first half and then being knackered when it transformed into headwinds for the second half
Highlight: waiting for a green light as I'm turning right, looking back and seeing a guy staring at me from his car in the other lane. His lane had a green light, and I informed him of this, only for him to laugh and say 'I'm just looking at your leg'. It was oily from my chain, but I'm still trying to figure out what on earth he was on about.

  • Managed to get a few hours in, but nothing too crazy...

Friday night: 2.5 laps of Richmond Park in the dark plus a climb up through Kingston and a dull ride along the A3. 50km

Saturday: solo spin down to Claygate and back, via Richmond, Ham and Petersham - around 54km

Sunday: 4 of us went out to Kent, covered Westerham Hill, Beddlestead and a few other climbs, 73km and back in time for Paris-Roubaix.

  • Rode my longest fixed gear ride today, 30 miles around Caithness, a beautiful day up here. https://www.strava.com/activities/287530761
Early morning mist on Loch Watten.

  • ^simply stunning.

  • Stunning.

You really are in the far north, aren't you.

  • Thanks chaps you won't get much further north without getting wet.

  • Decided to give riding with Twickenham CC a go today. They have a policy of noobs needing to ride in their induction group 3 times before being allowed to play with the real club riders.

The group were quite sketchy and slow. One rider crashed into the person in front when everyone else had stopped at a junction. Chain gang was difficult as a lot of the riders only rode in their top gear - they'd start and stop in that gear and as result really struggled to modulate their speed. In the first half of the ride barring one climb it felt like the only things that elevated my heart rate were the cyclists around me and some fucking terrifying driving. Some awful overtaking from drivers going in either direction.

At the cafe stop I asked if I may transfer to another group and felt a whole lot more comfortable. My through and off technique is a little rusty, the rider behind me was struggling to keep to my wheel when we were pulling forward. Towards the end of the ride someone mentioned there is a sprint coming up and then a couple of people jumped out of the bunch. I had no idea where the end of the sprint was but found myself joining in like our youngest dog chasing another hound just for the hell of it. All of us in the sprint were annihilated by a young lady in the group.

It was suggested I join them for some of their Tuesday rides. I may see if I can juggle my evening schedule to accommodate this.

  • TCC are a nice bunch - can think of worse people to ride with.

Ninety or so solo miles including WNKR Surrey Five Hills but with the addition of Box.

Was cold when I left and crazy hot when I returned - think I sweated out a whole load of useful stuff which might explain why I feel like I've been hit by a bus.

Took the nice biek with tubs because sunshine. Think I bottomed out on the rim descending coldharbour - no snakebite. Tub win, spare not required.

  • My weekend ride is tomorrow with pal over from the US. He needs to do 100 miles starting from St Pauls which means that I will be doing 120 and I am just in the process of going down with a cold, so it'll either kill me of cure me. Box Hill obv.

  • Wells that's an easy 100 including box right there ^^ :)

  • Set out to do a gorgeous sunny 80km today. Got back having done 50km.

Cut it short because I found a big ol' jackdaw sitting in the middle of the road, staggering around and unable to fly properly. I rode up the next hill so I could get phone signal, called the RSPCA, rode back down the hill to the nearest farm to scrounge up a box, poked some holes in it with my multitool, spent 15 minutes sliding all over the road in cleats trying to corral the bird into a corner so I could box it up, then rode back up the hill one-handed with the bird under my arm to get phone signal again. Waited there for an hour (in the sun!) until a nice lady from the RSPCA came to pick him up.

Jackdaws are hardly a rare bird, but he was beautiful and obviously in distress. I figure nature gives so much joy to me, it's nice to give something back. I like to think he might have a fighting chance now, rather than getting flattened by some dickhead in a BMW.

Not a great ride for my body, perhaps, but certainly good for my soul. :)

  • aww pal.

    jackdaws are ace, good karma.

  • Yup, wish I had seen it. We managed an easy 100 including some good Surrey hills and a pals house. American pal climbed more today than in all of the last year

  • love that I started this thread 5 years ago.
not really grumpy cat I read them all.
    keep it up
got a couple of 70 milers coming up just cant be arsed to write up

  • @jadias rep. good effort :)

  • Well done! I reckon the jackdaw will grant you some kind of wish at the end of all this, so if you get a phonecall from an unknown number you should answer it.

I did a little ride around Woking last Saturday, followed by solo London to Brighton the next day, then London to Brighton yesterday. Managed the latter (with my club) in 3:20, and worked my way into pace group 2 (of 4) so was very, very pleased with that.

    Woking:

  • If he could fly me up the Croix de Fer in July, that'd be perfect...

  • Took the TT bike to see the Queen.
