Nuts are around 50% carbs so you're already cheating ;-)
If you're just avoiding fast sugars then how about oats? or beans? or fruit alongside kefir/yoghurt/somethingwithsomeprotein?

It's fun but i'm not sure how making your own nut butter is better than buying a good organic (no fungicides) supermarket offering. They just contain nuts and salt. Avoid cheap/smooth ones with veg oils obvs.
The best nut for diy butter is hazelnut because of it's high fat content. Add coco and never crave Nutella again!

Just blitz a load of hazelnuts in a blender?

It needs to be a fairly hefty motor it takes some time to blend it to the point where the nuts release their oils.

But nothing needs to be added (apart from cocoa)?

Pretty much, toast first if you want but you can use raw nuts: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-food/hazelnut-butter-how-to-make-it-use-it-and-love-it/

I knew someone would go for that haha.

I'm going to make these energy balls for my next long ride:http://minimalistbaker.com/5-ingredient-peanut-butter-cup-energy-bites/
5 ingredients and no cooking, winner.

Oh, they look good: much less faff than the turbo-flapjacks I usually make and more manageable when riding too!

Visit a Wholefoods Market and you can make your own on the spot (not with organic nuts though). You pay for the novelty.
Or just buy this + Green&Blacks:

True! But they're of a complex carbohydrate nature, so they don't inflame my gut.
Fruit is generally not allowed on the diet, though I've been allowing myself a banana with yoghurt before longer rides (sugar, but not processed sugar of course), as I'd probably be screwed without it. Used to make my own Kefir when I first started with these issues - that shit is incredible!

Except they're not roasted nuts which may taste quite raw, some people are happy with this though.
Whole Foods got the cheapest peanuts too.

Quite like this:

Does anyone homebrew their own recovery drinks? Thinking 50% whey protein, 25% maltodextrin, 25% fructose plus electrolytes and multivitamins? For 101% recovery after hard sessions.
-
• #495
it might be risky mixing those ingredients. have you read about it somewhere? what if chemicals in protein and maltodextrin do not jell together well and produce some other element that may have bad effect?
-
• #496
I find banana, whey protein, peanut butter, milk and a bit of yougurt works pretty well (nutella works well but probably not for health reasons!).
-
• #497
+1. I have exactly the same (maybe people born in '85 have a particular fondness for this), but sometimes chuck spinach leaves in there too for some extra vitamins etc.

I tend to chuck a scoop of maltodextrin in With a berocca to rehydrate. Its possible I piss out 99% of the contents of the Berocca. But I'm somewhat addicted to them (must stop snorting them, the bicarb fucks with my sinuses). Then do a protein shake a bit after. Or I may even do a batch of porridge With a few scoops of whey protein in. Which my be a bit slow release for recovery. But it stops post ride over eating, and chocolate flavoured whey protein in porridge is awesome.
The SiS ReGo sachets are great for travelling.

ReGo is soy protein though, not as good as whey. Been using it since last summer though, fancied giving whey a go.

I only use it when out and about really. Lazy.
I often drive part way to a training ride (to get deeper into the Mountains). Then have a ReGo in the car on the way home. I may start bringing a DIY powder mix in a bidon for this instead. I have plenty of massive tubs of powdered suppliments I can chuck together.
