Bah fixed build - Currently TT infused

  • Just built up my first fixed gear. Bit of help from this forum with a frame and separately forks purchased from the classifieds.

I bought the wheelset (navigators) from a guy whos trying to go to Rio as a paralympian in the british athletics squad- he was into velodrome cycling and running but has been told to focus on running and stop cycling so is selling his kit including a dolan df4. I would like to get a lighter set of wheels - they got me going but 2Kgs! if i follow @umop3pisdn example and build a lightweight set of wheels i should net a considerable saving.

    with trispoke

Ive always wanted a Cinelli integralter and i though they would suit the Track Champ frame. Possibly not the lightest solution out there for bars.

Settled for a burrows seatpost as i couldnt find a used alpina wing/ambrosio/profile aero post in the right size.

My saddle is some unbranded town bike thing i stripped and cut down lots in an attempt to weight weenie it.... 330g ish to just under 200g - further weight loss is prohibited by steel rails. I heated up the plastic with a heatgun and reshaped a bit. I intend to replace with a carbon saddle nearer 100g

I intend to use the bike mainly for practice in fixed riding for TT. I suspect the current 50X16 gearing is not the best for being nippy around town but i wanted to be comfortable cadence wise for just over 20mph. Downside is that the rear wheel cannot get close to the seat tube and with a link taken out the chain is too tight. I may try a hillclimb on it but not 100% on the rules re: brakes.

first set of cranks i bought had shockingly f***** pedal threads so managed to buy some brand new primato advanced for £75 in the ribble sale. The BB is a campagnolo, not 100% on type but its one that needs the fag type tool.

As far as i can tell with some crappy luggage scale its currently 7.6Kg as built.

Just went for a ride..36 miles brakeless took a lot of road reading but happy with my effort.

  • wow, you really could have done a lot worse for a first fixed.

Well done, watch out with the brakelessness as it can really take some getting used to.

  • Weight weenie is so in for 2015.

<£25, <100G carbon saddle from eBay is one of the cheapest £/g upgrades out there, but obviosuly comfort is a factor. Tyres are another big one, might as well use Conti supersonics for racing which are <200g each, as well as latex tubes which are faster and lighter than butyl and are also a very cheap upgrade.

Switching from square taper to external BB road cranks is an easy way to save weight, but you can get chainline issues.

Ditch the SPDs for proper road pedals and shoes.

  • but not 100% on the rules re: brakes.

You need a front brake, which can be operated from the bars at their widest point.

  • yep i hear you.
I put double sided spds on so i could get clipped in easily through town but on a course i will use better pedals. I will probably buy that same saddle to try. I experimented with the plastic one above to see if i could get away without padding and although shape is a very personal thing its not such a massive expense for the experiment and i only intend to do short rides.

It was chainline issues that put me off the campagnolo mirage crank conversion < need a rear hub to suit such a setup. Miche is listed at 635g without bb but if i run 3/32 chain and cogs instead of this kmc z510 1/8 i should drop a bit of weight in the drivetrain id have though. Ive got some chainrings in 144 from old sakae chainsets, not going fibrelyte just yet.

It just so happens that i have one conti supersonic 20mm which i bought for rather a bargain £15 from my LBS sale, need to find another.

considering a rear wheel built with one of these..comical name but listed at 148g .. wondered if anyone knew if theyre any good.

  • I'd be very surprised if those are actually 148g, lightest track hubs tend to be ~180g.

Don't bother with carbon chainrings, they don't save a significant amount of weight over a decent alu ring like TA.

  • yeah i thought 148g would be a bit optimistic when compared to say novatech at 290g listed. 68g front looks similar to quite a few other hubs claiming to be very light.

  • Circus monkey track hub looks like a rebranded tensile hub: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/259115/

  • got 1 1/8 gralters?
    good work

  • i wish i had some scales

    removed spd m520 est 375-400g
fitted xtr m970 est 325g pair

if i use the bike competitively then i'll put on my DA 7410 pedals but before i can do that i'll have to get a fork with brake mount.

Slashed a further 60 ish grams off by replacing my steel railed but weenied saddle with a chinese carbon one.

and i also have a szechuan vuka base bar to try instead the Integralters. Unsure of weigh but combined with a short easton EA50 stem they still feel half the weight of the cinellis which doesnt surprise me. Bit torn as i way prefer the look of the old bars but the new ones will come into their own if i fit aero bars. Totally doing this thread wrong compared to the likes of umop3pisdn.

Components that could be lighter include
Wheelset - have a selection of fronts, only rear i have is the Navi pista
    Stem
    Seatpost - replace burrows
    replacing drive with 3/32
BB - currently a miche primato
Ti bolts over steel in stressed areas
    etc etc

  • Nice work. Take a look here for some more inspiration:
    http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/173099

  • trying out various things I fitted zipp vuka top mounts with ironman bars
    selle italia slr
cinelli pista stem in place of Easton ea50
switched to 3/32 gearing, running 53X16

on the lookout for ski bends instead. I think I'm going to have to fit one of testers headset caps to get the base bar lower. Wheelset will make way for something more sporty.

  • Did you heat the original saddle and then apply it firmly to your gooch to get that custom shape dong crevasse?

  • ^ prize for the least likely sentence to read today goes too...

  • where did you get this SMP copy?

looks like a nice ride and quick progress !

  • Small update, i've been using the bike for TT, as part of the marginal gains i made the disc wheel here using RC plane covering film, doesnt make that disc wheel sound but seems to work ok and is sturdy enough as long as one is careful transporting the bike. Best 10 so far is 23:22 on the e7/10b using 53X13

  • I'm looking at making a disc using similar RC film - how did it hold up (assuming careful handling). Do you have any more pics of it?
