I did this yesterday to recce Southend/Grain rides to Tilbury.
Path is overgrown and churned up by tractors on the North side river path just before Purfleet.
To avoid hills on the South side I busted through the Lafarge Cement Works between Shore and Creek Roads. Seems like they co-opted the council in 2013 to shut the right-of-way ('till 2019..).
The gate and walking path was open for their workers (hopefully on weekends too).
Further in towards town off the A226 you can avoid traffic and crap by riding down Lower Road/Manor Way. At the Cemex plant you can go through a gate on right down to a little path that takes you back to the river.
That stretch under the South side of the bridge is nice too.
