  • It's a cassette, there's not much to say. I've used them on my cross bike and they are durable if nothing else. They work well unless they are smothered in mud, but that's true for all brands.

  • Thanks.

Actually, been googling miche cassettes and jeez they've some bad reviews.
Is a cassette really just a cassette?

They're made of steel, so I guess should be fine.

  • Who takes the time to write an online review of a cassette?

  • The same sort of person who does tyre lever reviews

  • Get the frame faced. Skip this and it'll wear any brand of external BB.

Spoken to two independent bike shops now who have told me this isn't necessary, despite me saying I just want it done as a precaution... it's like they dont want my money?!

I may take it to evans, they've been the only one interested in my business so far. Weird.

  • I recently asking about getting a frame that had been powder-coated chased and faced. The guy seemed to think the same, he said he would chase the threads, but thought facing the shell was a bit unneccessary with a modern bb system

  • lol!

I'll order that miche. But worn report back. Too busy for a review on a cassette, now anyway!

  • That's exactly the wrong way round - an older cartridge style BB is generally ok with that sort of treatment, a modern external, twin-shell design needs both faces against which it aligns to be parallel with one another.

    External BB=face the shell.

  • Yeah, don't bother with cartridge, do bother with external.

  • Usually you should tap, and then face the BB, I agree it's best to have it done.

BB labour usually involved tapping and facing.

  • "But don't really need 32!"

Famous last words. Wait until day 8, climbing some mountain, bonking to fuck...

You'll think to yourself "fuck, hippy IS always right"

  • Ha. Last year I climbed ventoux after some hard riding, on my steel bike with 15kg of shit and I had 34X28. It was just a bit too small a gear. So with a lot less weight and better legs, 30 should be okay.
But either way, I'm going for a decent ride in may and then late june, so I'll be able to see if 30 isn't enough.

  • If it was faced in the factory then any paint can be taken off with a knife and it's good to go. Did they even look at the frame? If it's unfaced then (as @Dammit says) is pretty slapdash to skip facing the frame for use with outboard bearing cups.

    Find a better shop!

  • Epic kludge; Deore long cage mated with 5800 derailleur allows perfect 34/40 shifting with an 11 spd mountain cassette

  • They could just pedal a bit harder.

  • Or just ride with a triple.

Actually that system would work with a 11-1 option.

  • I think he wanted to ride a cross bike on MTB type trails and 45c tyres and flip it to road/cross use too

  • Or simply be able to run any conventional 10spd wheelset.

  • Is there a reason why campag GS's don't get a mention in here? Seems its all shimano and sram.

  • Everyone who still obsesses over Campag bought their last bike years ago. Not 'latest', 'last'.

  • So they're so bad they actually put you off cycling?

  • 34/40 still seems incredibly low of a gear. My lowest is 34/32 on my heavy as fuck cross check, and it's got a FireCross/Nano tire combination.

  • Meh. Perhaps they're heavy/old/touringtheworldwithatrailer or just riding trails knarly beyond comprehension. My lowest gear is 38x18 – do I win a prize?

  • Maybe they're out riding their bikes because their running gear is nice and reliable?

  • Nope, they're just old as fuck.
