• You know what I really think? Putting name and date on a Colnago-frame can be nerve-racking... ;-)

Even if it is an Elegant, I'm still not sure what tubing it's made from. In the catalogue they state "Tange Prestige" but the picture shows a Columbus (EL OS?) frameset... Downtube is 33 mm so OS it is but can't find whether Tange used oversized tubing or not.

  • here in the quote bellow EL OS relates to the Technos model, and OS means "oval" rather than "over" sized
"At my favorite local bike shop (Veloce Bicycles) who deals in nothing but bike porn the owner thought my bike was a master extra light. Turns out the Masters Extra Lights are heaver than the EL tube bikes. The first of the tecnos bikes used EL/OS. However a difference between EL-OS (oval) and EL (round) tubes. EL is one of the higher end columbus (see link to old columbus chart) tube sets that you could have used during that time. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what my frame is but I'm thinking early to late 90's euro tecnos. I have been looking for any info I can find on this beast and I have come up with many dead ends in a 6month period. I have seen a picture of one other EL tube nago for some euro country (see link 2). http://www.equusbicycle.com/bike/columbus/columbuschart.htm https://italiaanseracefietsen.wordpress.com/2010/03/11/de-colnago-van-marius/ (& my bike) http://velospace.org/node/30402
That's what I have. I will be keeping an eye on this post and seeing what I can find out. I think we have something rare so I'm keeping mine till I can no longer ride a bike. "

the Elegant model was at the time the lightest steel frame Colnago made, superseded by the later Technos

confounding this ''wisdom" is this advert, where the Elegant is described as EL OS,

the last tecnos I had my hands on had more of a crimped , Master type tubing rather than ovalised

one way to solve your conundrum would be to ascertain the frame weights of the Crystal and the Elegant, weigh your frame and then you have your answer
the Elegant and Technos models , being lighter steel, were really only meant for lighter riders, eg, Tecnos suits riders <8Okg,
"Great, thanks very much. I am currently building up mine. I am bit worried that the very light EL tubes are not stable enough for my weight (~90kg/~198lbs). Do you experience any issues like this?

I'm in at 190 and the only issue is speed wobble. I need to try other stem sizes to see if it fixes the problem. I wouldn't be afraid of this bike at all very well made."

    i is under 75kg
finally, the above post mentions this
"... recently bought a similar frame but in red. Does anyone know if the Elegant model was also manufactured in red? It's also Columbus EL tubing 60 cm.

    Red, Wordperfect purple and Blue."

If this statement is true, your frame cannot be an Elegant.

The elegant advert states decor ranges as "word perfect, red/yellow decor"
if the red/yellow is in combination, your frame saadly is not, if the red/yellow means single color, weigh it, and you could be lucky
I am inclined to believe red/yellow means together, as in the same advert, for the x-light, decor range is "word perfect, red/yellow, team lampre"
look at the 3 x-lights picture, word perfect, red/yellow, and lampre
this is a crystal, in yellow, made from brain

my final conclusion, given all the above, is that your frame cannot be an Elegant
