SPD-SL for fixed a good choice?

  • Just switched to SPD-SL shimanos from flats 'n straps. Much more power but it's hellishly tricky to get going, esp on hills.

Interested in knowing what fellow riders use.

Beautiful run in this morning though =)

  • Seen it done, probably better for long rides in the country.

To avoid duck-walk the connoisseurs on here use ATACs by Time.

  • Should also be noted that Mavic just bought Time, and according to Mavic they use the same cleat configuration as Time Atac do - That opens options on price and choice. FYI

  • I would say it pretty much depends on how you use your bike. I ride my fixed with spd-sl and i love them. But I don't use my fixed gear as a every day bike and i guess i wouldn't put spd-sl's on a fixed gear bike that i use as my main transport vehicle.

  • Well for the track I'm 100% set on the SPD-SL set up. I'm almost tempted to try ss for the street and see if that feels any better (I know i know!!!)

I have seen adapter plates that can change a 3 pin (my shoes) to a 2 pin for the Time cleats. Do these adapters work or are they garbage?

  • I use SPD-SLs. I have the release turned down compared to on my road bike. I primarily use them for commuting and training rides. You'll get used to them on the hill starts.

If I'm taking the bike to a more social engagement, I just swap over to flats and straps.

  • Popped on a freewheel on the way home tonight, just to get used to the clip in and out business. I really didn't like freewheeling very, very odd :(

  • Been a weird few trips using spd-sl on the track bike to/from herne hill, instead of cages. Old-ish 105 pedals. Got them set of the loose setting. Getting used to it slowly. Agreed on hill start, but mostly trying to get that 2-o'clock when stopping, so it's an easy push off and clip in.

  • So I've tried for a few days on my 6mile trip to work and I cannot get the hang of it yet, even with ss. Back to flats 'n straps for now which will be more convenient as for now as i won't need two pairs of shoes.
