  • I'm in the latter stages of choosing a 'nice' (read: expensive by my standards) watch to mark a career milestone.

I've narrowed it down to the new Tudor North Flag (subject to seeing it in the metal, but I like it a lot from the photos), the NOMOS Metro (original version with the power reserve indicator, which I was delighted to hear they aren't discontinuing), and a used Rolex 114270 Explorer, (apparently all the rage around these parts at the moment, but something I've lusted after for a while). Outside contenders are the IWC Mk.XVII, and the Sinn 857 UTC.

Help? I'm naively imagining that the Tudor and the NOMOS are possible future classics given that they are the first examples from their respective brands with in-house movements (fully in-house, in the case of the Metro), and something nice to leave to my offspring.

  • The Metro is a beautiful watch. I managed to find one to try on a couple of months ago. Very well made and a bargain at their current price.

Personally I'm not a fan of the North Flag but I can see its appeal.

Obviously I'm a big fan of the 114270 too :).

I'd say Explorer or metro but try to find them to try on first.

  • Post needs more pictures. I think the Tudor is a slightly odd one; it looks a bit 90's to me, not that there's anything wrong with that.

If I were blowing that sort of cash, I think I'd want either the IWC or Rolex. But I personally wouldn't ever want to be seen wearing a Rolex (sorry guys!).

  • I'm a big fan of the explorer & quite wanted one for a big occasion this year myself but the used prices are still a huge step up from the other two aren't they?

I'd be interested to hear what you think of the North Flag; it's one that I was considering too though I haven't actually held one yet but the black ring on the bezel is putting me off a bit.

The heritage ranger doesn't look bad on the bracelet but I think they made it too big; such a large plain face felt a bit strange...
