How much seatpost in?

Posted on
  • Im using a Thomson elite seatpost that i got from eBay some months ago. It was chopped by the previous owner, thanks to that I got a bargain. But of course everything comes at a price and for some unknown reason I'm getting my saddle higher and higher, to a point that I'm wondering if there's enough post in my frame.
Can someone with an untouched Thomson tell me how long is the minimal insertion? Any general advice about the matter?

  • As long as it´s deeper than the junction between the top tube and seat tube it´s fine. Over that is quite risky for you and for the frame.

  • I was thinking the same, but having all my weight clamped on 90mm of aluminium doesn't feel "right"

  • A snapped seat post and a snapped seat tube are two different issues.

Agree that the post needs to be below the top tube to avoid stressing the seat tube.

However, I also like to have one third of the post's overall length in the tube regardless of the where the top tube joins.
