  • I want to sell my 2005 Trek 1500 (Aluminium frame, carbon fork, Shimano 105) and get a secondhand year-round commuter (-something comparative or better in quality, giving up as little of the racer geometry but with mudguard and rack mounts).

    What should I go for?

  • Sorry for huge pic.

    Bag makers?
What's the black edging material on tool rolls/bags etc called?
I wanna order a small amount from eBay but I have no idea what to type in the 'SEARCH' box?

  • grosgrain, petersham or bias binding tape

  • I want a 12-28 Shimano cassette for hills, but I appear limited to 11-28 or 12-27

Can I mix-and-match the separate cogs?

    I have a spare Ultegra 12-25 (12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25)

    I can buy an 11-28 (11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-28)

Can I then swap out the 11-12-13-14-15 with 12-13-14-15-16?

  • @adrevporn and @danb

    Cheers guys.
Just bought a 50mtr roll of 25mm cotton bias binding tape for a tenner.

  • The first few sprockets are loose, then the (if I recall correctly) largest five that are on carriers.

So with your 11-28 the 11-12-13-14-15-17 would be loose sprockets, then the 19-21-23 would be one group and the 25-28 would be on another.

If you used the spacers from the 11 speed cassette then you should be able to swap in the sprockets from the 12-25, I would think.

  • Here are the ratio's for all 6800 cassettes:

    11-23: 11-12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23
    11-25: 11-12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25
    11-28: 11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25-28
    12-25: 12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-25

So you could use the first six of the 6800 12-25 with the final five of the 11-28

  • The same should hold true for *700 / 10-speed cassettes too, non?

  • I believe so, the sprocket thickness is the same if I am not being a mental

  • just remember the 12 and the 11 use different lockrings, so keep an eye on which goes where.

  • I'll give it a go.

What's the worst that could happen?...

  • Zip-tie all the things

  • What's the worst that could happen?

You could end up with a 12-speed cassette? :-)

It's best to look at the exploded views before spending any money, as some cassettes have variations in sprocket grouping between sizes, although this doesn't appear to be an issue with CS-6700 which all use just one triplet and 7 loose sprockets. There is a CS-6700 12-30, I'd get that rather than making a frankencassette.

  • I feel that I'm giving away too many grimpeur suffereur points already by going to a 28

There will be a secret 38 on the front though...

  • My frame has cable stops that are currently set up for cable pull disc brakes. I'd like to get them drilled out to run hydraulic brakes instead.

Frame is made of titanium. Who would undertake such work (a machinist?) and can anyone suggest someone to do it ideally near New Malden/Kingston.

The problem is trying to get a drill parallel to the frame and possibly the metal hardening during the process.

  • I'd say that's a grinding job rather than a drilling job. Nobody who knows what the frame is worth would take it on, far to much risk of expensive damage for a small job. Get your Dremel out, using a selection of small rotary burrs

  • Drilling is for idiots, just get adaptors.

  • i haz adaptors, but world rather a tidier solution

  • This is for the banana-Lynskey?

  • yep, lynskey seem to think its fine. it has been stripped and cleaned, no cracks etc and it appears 3,5mm is within their tolerances

  • Wow

  • 18bikes are selling the 2015 Croix de Fer forks, might be worth a go asking if they can do Equilibrium Disc ones too. Alternatively, Condor might sell you the Fratello disc fork too.

  • How come Neil's Wheel didn't tell you that it's way out of tolerances?

  • They said check with Lynskey

Genesis have said to their mechanic that 5-6mm is acceptable.
