I like quartz, opens the opportunity for slimmer cases and more money to spend on the case quality, i love my georg jensen koppel and all my uniform wares watches. As a rule i stick to swiss quality (ETA /ronda quartz movements) and for ease of services almost all of my automatics have eta 2824 movements.
Anyhoo, don't rule out quartz entirely. Just don't be cheap if you can afford more... i'd rather have a top quality quartz over a low end automatic every time.
I hear you however for me a quartz watch will never touch mechanical or automatic. Time is alive, it is life, we measure ourselves by it and somehow an auto or mech watch feels closer to time as life, while quartz feels more distant less human.
although if i chose to be romantic, the idea of putting a current through a crystal to create vibrations that can translate into exact time is pretty magical ;)
