There have been many forum rides to Brighton and a lot of people get up Ditchling riding fixed. To be honest I'd hate to do it on the day of the big ride down there, if you are struggling you may need to tack up the hill but if there are hundreds of people walking this would not be possible. Strangely I prefer riding down there fixed rather than geared there is a certain masochistic pleasure doing it on the inappropriate bike.
