Yes it's easy enough. Eat plenty and don't let slower riders annoy you or faster riders irk you. Just chill and you'll be there before you know it.

Did it on a fixed two years ago when I joined the charity event. Pretty ok, except when we got to the beacon.. Had to get off as somebody in front of me stopped and I lost my momentum after that.
So to answer your question, you can use any bike to get to Brighton from London. It just depends if you yourself can actually do it.

From what ive heard, most people get off at Ditchling Beacon and walk up anyway. To be honest, i'm convinced it would be fine, but wondered if people had horror stories!

I've done it. It was then my longest ever ride and I was fine on 48/16.
Chips on the beach, slept on the train home then DJ'd a wedding that night.
Tips: take food and drink. Don't go off too fast. Make sure you've got good, comprehensive directions or some sort of navigation system visible on your bars so you don't stop every ten minutes. Erm...don't forget to put on clothes when you wake up.

Thanks all. So, doing the official London to Brighton ride... do they have sign posts/ stewards along the ride? I'm planning on doing this ride with my mum who will, no doubt, not be in any hurry so it should be fine. Running 44/16 now so should have absolutely no problem.

It's a nice ride down to the beach. Bitchling is annoying if you dislike that stuff and are geared too high but it's easy enough fixed let alone SS. Usual stuff for all rides apply, eat, drink, be self sufficient in terms of punctures and repairs.

Did it with the missus when she was doing it for charidee. 68", good enough for a 6 minute ascent of Ditchling.

I grew up in Brighton so, luckily, I don't need to be sold on the array of attractions, haha.
Chips, beaches, rainbow flags, dreadlocks, tie-dye and slightly less ambition.Plus, i have a bed i can sleep in before returning. Bonus x1000

There have been many forum rides to Brighton and a lot of people get up Ditchling riding fixed. To be honest I'd hate to do it on the day of the big ride down there, if you are struggling you may need to tack up the hill but if there are hundreds of people walking this would not be possible. Strangely I prefer riding down there fixed rather than geared there is a certain masochistic pleasure doing it on the inappropriate bike.

Yeah I don't think there's much chance of getting lost on the big charity days.
And it shouldn't be a problem ss or fixed. You may have walk bits though because there's too many people in the way.
Have fun -

If you're doing the charity event, be sure to get the earliest spot you can. Taking the ones after 8am and you'll have a very bad day due to congestion. As I've said, it's only the beacon you have to worry about during this event.
- Comfortable clothes
- Your usual puncture kit i.e. tubes/pump/puncture kits/etc..
- Food, i suggest bringing fruits, bananas are good, had some flapjacks as well.
- Dont have to worry about water that much as there are filling stations on the way.
- Oh, and be vigilant on who's in front of you. Most of them stop so abruptly that you end up hitting them from behind. *happened to me a couple of times..
- Careful on the steep downhills. When I did the event, I cant remember where it happened but at least 3 people got into an accident on this steep downhill cuz the first one who got to the bottom slowed down to a halt which got the other 2 behind him in a collision.
- Comfortable clothes
Thoughts? Can it be done?
