Some people have questioned the utility of Crank Bros DirectSet headsets. Mine doesn't get anywhere near enough abuse for me to form a view, but the fact that Crank Bros have completely pulled out of the headset market would suggest that they were failing to impress compared with the established competition. On the one hand, that was good for me as I got mine in a sale at about ⅓ of rrp, on the other it's a shame as I quite like the basic idea, but they clearly couldn't get it to fly in competition with headsets built with separate cups and bearings.

  • Ta.

  • Pls ignore any examples of poor setup or negligent maintenance. Thanks.

  • WTF - those levers are ridiculously high. I never really look at my bike from afar like that...

  • Yesterday while waiting for a light, i grabbed my front brake lever and rocked my bike back and forth checking the headset tolerances. While doing this I could see the OE steel fork visibly flexing back and forth at the crown junction a distance of about 15 to 20mm @ the dropouts. Is this normal? Are these steel forks really "that" flexy? Has anyone had a OE fork fail?

  • Almost…

  • Nice paint. What's the gearing?

  • @Sam_Doman you even went as far as getting rim squeezers to slow down.

  • 34t up front, and I stuck a 14t sprocket on for flat woodland/gravel blasting, but will up it to a 16t for cx duties. Think I'll probably just add an extra chain link and change to the 16t, and leave it at that though.

  • Hi
    quick question
can you get 135 mm spacing between dropouts on a pompino frame or is it 120 only

  • They used to come in 120mm and 135mm versions but nowadays it's only 120mm. Pompetamines are 135mm though.

You could cold set a Pomp to 135mm but given that the chainstays are a known cracking point it's probably not worth it.

  • Cheers for imfo

  • I coldset one without issue.

  • username is apt.

  • I was going to say similar... Although don't bother cold setting, just push the wheel in there... It'll be fine.

    #internetadvice

  • It is apt, but not in that way.

  • Cheers not worried that's it's 135mm just never came across that spacing before as my last 2 have both been 120mm
