  • I wish it was like that. Today's fakery pisses me off. Bring back the days when they were scrapping in the pits, slagging off their bosses for providing shit cars - people like Irving and Schumacher before he got the Hollywood facade makeover spin.

  • There is certainly an element of reality tv creeping in regarding the "personalities", along with all the football-esque / management speak and cheesy intros etc.

  • Hey, '&d, why do you keep abbreviating by only saying the last two syllables of teams and drivers? It makes me uncomfortable.

    I do like watching the super fast broom-broom cars going round and making all the noises and stuff but man., almost oll the drivers are revolting. It makes it very hard to have a preference. Apart from Riccardo. And Button. Oh and Grossjean. And Raikonen. And anyone new who hasn't revealed their innate cuntishness yet.

  • I don't get the raikkonen love. he is a mercinary. he was awesome when he started, then got a butt tonne of money to drive for ferrari and has barely turned up since. the whole non-personality thing to the media seems so put on, too.

  • Meh. He just doesn't seem to play the media game and I like that. I like that he's unapologetically surly. And drilly funny with it. He was great but doesn't seem to have anything like the fire he had before he went of rallying or whatever it was but I don't hate him and that counts as a win.

  • Something that crossed my mind the other day, bear with me on this...

    When a car is mid-corner and another one overtakes (or is just in-front) you get an aerodynamic stall, where loss of downforce occurs due to interrupted airflow over the front wing. This makes life difficult for the car behind.

    I wondered if any teams design their aero packages to be offensive in order to disrupt near-by cars. Technically they could design them so that the area of messy air behind (and around) the car is larger than is necessary to make overtaking cars work harder. This would probably increase drag, though.

  • This happens already enough for drivers preferring to slow down and stay a few meters further behind. That's why they introduced DRS or passes would have been happening almost only in the pits.

  • I'm going to go for Monza because the flights to Budapest were unreal.

    Where should I be sitting?

  • @Tenderloin I haven't been to Monza, but I always either try to find the stands with the most vantage points, or a stand on one of the corners.

    Last year in Abu Dhabi, we were in a stand at the end of the main straight and saw plenty of overtaking. We even had the pleasure of orange brakes on the Lotus, which @gridds assured us wasn't his department.

  • I've not been to Monza either, but would guess Ascari would be a decent option, 13-16 (do Italians consider 14 unlucky?) No idea if this is still current)...

    13 would give you a decent view down the previous straight but does put a gravel trap between you and the track. 16 might be a better option. Check youtube and see if there's any videos shot from either, or anywhere else you're considering.

  • Ha, I think I was talking about the brake by wire system (ERS-K effectively). Which last year was a shambles.
    The Merc system is night and day better!
    Actually I've been looking at the actual disks and pads a fair bit lately but only in terms of material and properties. They're made by Hitco, not us.

  • I'm quite keen to go for a covered grandstand and one that doesn't have metal seats - I'm thinking of going for block 4 on the above image and then sitting in general admission on Friday practice/qualifying
