  • Need some advice while I can still run away if necessary. Bought this '03 Cannondale Scalpel for £440 all in. Comes with both a Lefty DLR Ti and a Fatty Ultra 88 Si, but both are likely to need some servicing. What can I expect, any experts out there? I saw @Howard pulled one apart, but that one looked pretty shot.

    Here's what the seller has said:

    The rear shock is in good condition - it has been set to 'off' most of
    the time I have had the bike as only ever used the bike to go to my
    parents which is all road type riding. The front lefty shock would
    probably need attention as would the original one I believe, these
    have never been serviced. They were both good when I purchased the
    bike and I have probably only done 500 miles on it in the last 10
    years of ownership. I can't say how many miles were done on them
    before mind.

    Basically should I abandon ship or is it worth a punt? Slightly my dream bike from when I was 15.

    There are several places that service the forks.
    The lefty forks have a following in the fat-bike world as you can get extra large offset crowns for 4-5" tyres, even if it's knackered inside it will still have value for the hub and any serviceable parts.

    My T7 is four generations old now and the new T11 looks completely different. This was an ebay buy as frame/forks+all components minus wheels, I made the seller a cheeky offer for the frame only and here we are. Made a thread for it - http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/265328/#comment12190211

    I too got lucky with mine - a most generous price from @scherrit - I think he was originally looking to distribute them but the price was a bit offputting - justified in the build quality I guess, but it's still difficult to find anyone willing to part with that sort of dosh for an aluminium track frame...

    The bike has always been stored inside, most of the time in a house,
    perhaps a few months in total in a garage.

    I have had a look at the shocks. The lefty has it's full range of
    movement and has, as far as I can tell, good resistance when pushing
    on it. It returns to it's original position. The original fork does
    not fully extend to it's max after compressing. The turning dial on
    the original does have a crack through the plastic I noticed - this is
    probably the reason, along with the lack of return travel, that I
    swapped it out years ago for the lefty.

    Seems promising on the lefty front? Can't be in too bad condition

  • Bit out of touch with service on fatty headshox, years ago it used to be mud-dock in Bristol (for south west anyway for cannondale)
    There are a couple of cannondale parts specialists out there (quick goodle-fu showed a few) of the 2 forks the fatty might be harder to source parts for, but the lefty has some aftermarket support on hubs and some parts, either way, either fork has some value if broken for spares.
    Retro bike might be a good place to enquire with some extra google-fu, no idea if there is a special cannondale owners forum somewhere.

    A friend had a couple of Delta V's back in the 90's the headshox fatty's from memory where pretty good and fairly user serviceable although he was, and still is a bike mech :)
