If it was worth £55 to get home 2 hours earlier, outside of rush hour then yes.
The train company doesn't care. When you bought that £18 advanced fare ticket 6 weeks ago Virgin Trains would have received the balance (from the normal price) as a subsidy from the Government.
We have some of the most expensive fares compared to Europe, but also some of the cheapest. It's just walk up fares during peak times where we generally come out worst:-
