Unless it's MTB dirty, use baby wipes and run the chain though them and then lube it. They also work well for wiping the drive train. I'm guessing you won't have any of these at homes but they are only a pound a packet in Tescos.
I haven't cleaned it since december and it's pretty dirty, i tried to clean most of it and i've done an alright job with soapy water so far. I plan to replace the chain soon enough.
Need to sort the ghastly length of the cables and the protective part, far too long and ugly
