On the subject of worn rims, my Archetypes are nearing the end of their days and I'm contemplating what to rebuild with.
These will be built onto the existing DA 9000 hubs and are year round training wheels. I'm less of a climber, more suited to the flats, but would like something that is more of an all rounder.
I've been happy with the rims, but would welcome suggestions in terms of alternatives.

I offer Hippy as evidence of what high mileages (and enormous weight) do to rims when combined with caliper brakes.

Have to say I've been really impressed with the archetypes over the last week. The handling and braking (once it settled down) is fantastic and i never felt like they were heavy.
Despite a week of mountain descending and mixed weather the anodising is still in tact too. Which is nice. -

I wish I had never seen this post. Unfortunately I did, and I haven't been able to get deep carbon Enve out of my mind since. I'm about to pull the trigger on these:

Is there anything superior at the same price?

I wouldn't pay that amount for a wheelset with an outdated V-shaped rim profile - Toroidal shape is what it's all about nowadays.

while they look nice, i'd be tempted by the convenince of clinchers and look at something like the wheelsmith aero 60 whihc you can have with chris kings for a bit less , or if your heart is set on tubs, zipp 404 tubs http://www.ubyk.co.uk/zipp-404-firecrest-tubular-sram-shimano-wheelset-2015/23864 or

meh. Custom builds for the same money and weight let you choose a replaceable rim.

Sorry for the repost but didn't get an answer last time and I messed my rear yesterday so need to chop chop.
What spokes should I use for road bike disc wheels? I've got 32h Novatec D711SB/772SB that will be built on Archetypes (unless you can suggest something better) and I weigh around 85 kg. Also, where in London could I go in and have the wheels built quickly (same day/next day)?

Any spokes would be fine. Ask the shop where you're having the work done which they use?
I'd call around in advance and book a wheelbuild slot at a LBS?

Surely disc brakes exert a whole lot more pressure on the wheels so wouldn't something like Sapim D-Light instead of Race or whatever be more suited?
-
• #4640
at 85kg I'd be amazed if you could measure any change
-
• #4641
D-light is a thinner spoke.

How rude...

I'm over 100kg and use Sapim Race on four different disc wheelsets, on and off road. They're plenty strong enough for you. D-Light do look good, should you want to go a tiny bit lighter.
Race - 2.0/1.8/2.0mm
D-Light - 2.0/1.65/2.0mm

Ah, right. Thanks for the all the input.
The weight is not really an issue and I imagine that it would be a lot easier finding a wheelbuilder with Race in stock (while probably not so easy for D-Light). Once again, thanks and will go for Race or Competition then. -

Given that you're not going for a really light disc specific rim and 32 spokes (or 64) is it worth forking out for bling spokes?
I'd have thought that any decent double butted spokes like DT Swiss comps would be fine. Or Alpine iii if you want to be on the safe side. Or (as suggested) just go with what whoever builds them recommends which makes the most sense.

You're right, there's probably not so I won't go for anything above Competition or Race.
On a side note, are there any disc specific wide rims (23mm+)?
Archetypes seem like a good choice and many people have used them before but maybe I've missed something. -
• #4647
The Archetype is a good choice, I just meant that if you were going for a really light build* you'd probably be using a disc specific rim not built for sidewall braking - like one of the Stans rims or carbon as well as a 28/28h build.
High end WW spokes are pricey, but when you're only buying 20+28 it's not too bad. 32+32 though starts adding up.
*where the gms saved on the spokes would "matter".

They will be used as work wheels in London so I'm trying to find that sweet balance between light and strong. Completely forgot about Stans though so will definitely check out some of their rims.

Stans Grail
obvs. @edscoble only has disc brakes.
